City staff received an expression of interest from a Council member, who had received a request from a resident, regarding old street signs and whether or not they could be handed out or purchased from the City.
As the City replaces broken or worn street signs, with consistent branding across the City where the old signs go is a question that has come up more than once. Currently old signs are recycled at a break even cost to the City, i.e. the recycling dumpster is provided and the signs taken away at no cost.
If the goal is to give the signs to residents that have an interest in them, then the City Council could adopt a resolution declaring them to be salvage property and finding that the City benefits by giving them to residents at no cost because it relieves the City of the burden of storing and disposing of them in another manner.
To save costs the City hasn't changed out signs with new branding in large swaths of territory, instead the focus has been on replacing stolen, broken, or worn signs. However, if the sign is at an intersection with multiple signs, then all of them at that location will be replaced.
